A FIELD GUIDE TO BRITAIN’S STRANGE & WONDERFUL DAYS OUT 145 EVENTS · ENGLAND · SCOTLAND · WALES · NORTHERN IRELAND

ROUND-UP GUIDE · 12 EVENTS

Odd days out with kids.

For a first odd day out, start with something your children will recognise: a puppet show, a decorated bed, a picture made of petals or a very determined snail. All twelve are flagged family-suitable in their guides, but they make very different days. A procession suits watching in short bursts; a competition may keep you longer.

Choose around your own children, not the oddest-sounding name. Read the current programme for age limits, noise, toilets and access, and be clear whether you're watching or entering. Family-suitable doesn't mean step-free or free to get in. Work out somewhere to take a breather, and be ready to slip away from the busiest spot once the fun runs out.
