A FIELD GUIDE TO BRITAIN’S STRANGE & WONDERFUL DAYS OUT 145 EVENTS · ENGLAND · SCOTLAND · WALES · NORTHERN IRELAND

ABOUT THIS GUIDE

A curious guide.
A practical purpose.

Britain’s unusual events deserve more than a list of funny names. We gather the details that help you decide whether to go, how to get there and what to expect when you arrive.

What we cover

145 events across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland: fire festivals, folk customs, mass ball games, odd championships, unusual races, festive dips and a little ceremony and pageantry. It’s a growing collection, not a complete list — there is always another village with another very old reason to do something strange.

How dates are labelled

Date announced — the organiser or another named source publishes the next date. Traditional date — the date is fixed by custom (5 November, New Year’s Day, Shrove Tuesday…), so we’ve worked it out, but arrangements can still change. Usually [month] — we know when it normally happens but the next date isn’t published. We never roll last year’s date forward and call it confirmed.

Where the information comes from

We prioritise organisers, local councils, transport operators and tourism bodies. Every guide links to its sources. Research was last checked on 22 October 2026. We have not visited every event or tested every journey, so always check the organiser before you travel.

Local customs come first

Some events are open competitions. Others have local eligibility rules and welcome visitors as spectators. Each guide says which, and we’d ask you to follow the organiser’s instructions and respect the people who keep these traditions alive.

Booking.com and Trainline links

Our “stay nearby” and “check trains” buttons are affiliate links. If you book through them we may earn a small commission from Booking.com or Trainline, at no extra cost to you. It helps keep the guide free. It never decides which events we include or what we say about them.

Photos

Photos come from Wikimedia Commons and are used under their Creative Commons or public-domain licences, credited under each image and on our photo credits page. Where we couldn’t find a good free photo of the event itself, we show the place where it happens and say so in the caption.

Saving events and privacy

The heart buttons save events in your own browser. There are no accounts and no sign-up. Calendar downloads are simple files; the subscription feed refreshes from this site.
