Check the edition before booking
The homepage currently displays Saturday 26 December at 11am without an explicit year in that line. Its news items still refer to 2025, while the About page describes a 2024 programme. The Saturday wording could refer to 2026, but that is an inference, not enough to verify the next edition here. Check a dated organiser announcement or booking page before making firm plans.
The story behind it
Tenby's swim is the oldest festive dip in this corner of Pembrokeshire. It began in 1971, when around 100 hardy swimmers ran into the sea and raised £400 towards new radar equipment for the town's lifeboat. The idea caught on, and it has since grown into one of Wales's best-known Christmas traditions, with more than a thousand people taking to the water on North Beach in recent years. Fancy dress is very much part of the fun, with a different theme announced each year, so the beach fills with costumed swimmers as well as crowds watching from the harbour walls and cliffs. Over the decades the swim has raised more than £300,000 for good causes, all for a few bracing minutes in the December sea.
Watching and taking part
The association describes a mass run into the sea, often with a fancy-dress theme, and provides separate entry and sponsorship links. Check the next theme, registration process and beneficiary rather than copying an older edition. A spectator supporting friends should agree a meeting point and allow time around the beach gathering.
Getting to North Beach
Use North Beach, Tenby, as the event location rather than assuming any beach in the town is the venue. Christmas-period transport and town parking need checking for the actual date. We have not verified an event shuttle, a reserved spectator car park or the holiday rail timetable, so none is promised here.
Access and facilities
Confirm step-free beach access, the spectator layout, toilets and changing arrangements directly if they affect your visit. An old description of post-swim refreshments or medals does not guarantee the same provision next time. The event’s current instructions should determine participant arrangements.
Taking part
The swim's charitable side lasts a lot longer than the few minutes in the sea. A February 2026 report on the 2025 event records donations to six local organisations: Tenby RNLI, Tenby Sea Cadets, the Old Chapel, Sandy Bear, Tenby Surf Lifesaving Club and Tenby Rowing Club. It's a good reminder that you can support the event without dreaming up a spectacular costume. It also shows why last year's list of beneficiaries won't necessarily be next year's.
Use the association's current sponsorship and entry information to decide how to chip in. If you'd rather cheer friends on from dry land, ask which fundraising page or charity they're using, and keep that separate from any participation fee. The 2025 event also ran a prize draw, but there's no saying the same offer will come back. Look for a dated announcement that names the edition, the beneficiaries and the conditions before you pay anything or promise sponsors a particular reward.
Make a day of it nearby
On a longer stay, Tenby Museum and Art Gallery on Castle Hill is worth a look, with its own visitor information, exhibitions and access advice. Its published winter schedule is Tuesday to Friday, though, so it's not one for after a Saturday Boxing Day swim. Save it for another day and check for holiday closures. The walk up Castle Hill is steep, too, so plan it as a proper visit rather than a quick warm-up stop.
When its calendar shows it open, the National Trust's Tudor Merchant's House on Quay Hill is a second heritage option. It's a separate historic house with its own admission and access guide, tucked into the lanes around Tudor Square and the harbour. Neither building is necessarily open on Boxing Day. If both are shut on your dates, enjoy the town outdoors and keep an indoor visit for another trip, rather than arriving with a plan built on their usual weekly hours.
Accessibility and families
Read the detailed access information for any indoor stop. Tenby Museum has a lift serving its floors, but there are also three steps down to the accessible toilet and the temporary exhibition gallery, which may rule them out for some visitors. It asks wheelchair users to get in touch ahead so staff can prepare. So "lift available" doesn't on its own tell you whether every part of the visit will work for a particular person.
For the Tudor Merchant's House, the National Trust links to a dedicated AccessAble guide and flags steps and uneven ground. Use that guide for the house, rather than assuming the museum's information applies. These are ideas for a longer family stay, not confirmed changing facilities for swimmers. If you're coming to the swim with children or someone who needs support, separate what the swimmer needs from what the spectators need, and ask the association about both. Agree who'll look after the bags and where everyone will meet once the swimmers are out of the water.
