Bampton Morris Day of Dance

Monday 31 May 2027

On the spring bank holiday Bampton hands its streets over to the morris. Three local sides dance from breakfast time until evening, and the whole village seems to go with them from garden to pub to green.

What to expect

The three Bampton sides start dancing at around 8.30 to 9am and spend the day touring the village, stopping at pubs, open spaces and private gardens. You will see the white kit, the bells, the handkerchiefs and sticks, and the musicians keeping the beat, plus a fool and a cake-bearer carrying a tin of cake for luck. The pace is relaxed: a few dances, a drink, then on to the next spot. In the evening guest sides join the hosts, mostly around the pubs, and dancing carries on until about 9pm. It is not a staged show so much as a village holiday you can wander through.

The story behind it

Bampton is famous in morris circles because its dancing is believed to have carried on with barely a break for centuries, while elsewhere the tradition faded and had to be revived from notes and memories. Families have passed the dances, tunes and roles down through the generations, and the day still has the feel of something the village does for itself. Over time the original side has grown into three, each proudly keeping its own style. It is often spoken of as the oldest continuous morris tradition in England, and watching it you can see why people travel to be there.

Getting there and home

There is no station in Bampton. Hanborough and Oxford are the nearest rail stations, with onward buses running via Witney; bank holiday timetables can be thin, so check before you set out. By car, Bampton sits south-west of Witney off the A4095. Parking in the village is limited and fills quickly on the day, so arrive early and be prepared to walk in from the edges. Staying in Witney or Oxford gives the widest choice of beds.

Watching, taking part and tips

This is for watching: the dancers are the village's own sides. Pick up the dancing anywhere in the village and drift along with it, or settle near a pub where several sides pass through. Give the dancers room, as sticks and leaps need space. It is a friendly, family day with plenty of children about. Bring sun cream or a waterproof according to the forecast, cash for food and drink, and comfortable shoes for a day on your feet.

Where to watch

Go by the information from the particular Bampton side you're following. The village's disambiguation website lists three teams, so one side's timetable won't cover everything happening in the village. In 2026 the Traditional Morris Dancers pointed spectators to posters put up locally and stressed that their times were approximate. Take that as permission to let the day unfold, rather than racing a minute-by-minute route from an old screenshot.

The same side asks people not to share its full schedule on social media. Please honour that, and don't treat stops in private gardens as open to all comers. Look for the side's current public information and ask locally where you're welcome to stand. At a dance, keep the whole set clear, including the space the dancers need when they turn or step backwards. Picking a public stop and letting the dancing come to you is often more relaxing than chasing a team about. It's worth a look at the published dance repertoire beforehand too: the different tunes and formations reward a bit of patient watching.

Kelmscott Manor suits anyone with a taste for craft, design and the countryside. The Society of Antiquaries owns the former home of William Morris and his family, filled with objects and artwork connected to them. Timed house entry is separate from the rest of the estate, and it currently opens seasonally from Thursday to Saturday. So plan it around your Bampton weekend; don't count on it being open on the bank-holiday Monday.

Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens is a different kind of family day. It features animals including giraffes, rhinos and penguins, along with its gardens and visitor facilities. Use its current tickets, travel and accessibility pages to plan a separate trip. Pick whichever suits your group rather than tacking both onto a long day of dancing. Neither is part of the Morris programme, and each needs its own journey. Putting one on another day means you can linger at a village stop that runs long without abandoning a booked admission slot.

Eating and drinking

The dancing side's 2026 information named the Market Tavern and linked to the pub's own page for opening times. That's a handy way to check on a meal, but last year's special barbecue menu and garden-bar dates aren't promises for next Whitsun. Contact the pub about the date you're coming, especially if you want a proper sit-down meal rather than a bite between dances.

The side's visitor guidance encourages you to support local businesses, and warns that some refreshments are possible rather than guaranteed. Bear that in mind: an occasional van mentioned in a past guide is not a booked caterer. If you can't confirm a particular meal or dietary need, bring what your group needs. If you nip inside to order, keep the public dancing area usable, and don't assume a pub garden is free to use just because dancers have stopped there before. A flexible meal plan suits the day far better than treating each dance stop as a timed table booking.

Questions people ask

Does one timetable cover every Bampton side?

No, there are three sides. Use current information from the side you're following, plus local public notices.

Can I repost the full dancing schedule?

Please don't. The Traditional Morris Dancers' 2026 page asks readers not to share its full schedule on social media.

Can visitors enter every garden stop?

Not necessarily. Use public information and ask where you're welcome; a dance in a private garden doesn't open it up to visitors generally.

Is Kelmscott Manor normally open on Monday?

No. It currently opens seasonally, Thursday to Saturday. Check its latest calendar before planning a bank-holiday visit.
